In January 2026, a delegation of Idaho educators, industry leaders, and workforce development professionals traveled to Taiwan on a trade mission organized by the Idaho Department of Commerce and the Idaho–Asia Trade Office.
Timed to mark the 40th anniversary of the Idaho–Taiwan Sister State relationship established in 1984, the mission carried three focused priorities: understanding Taiwan's semiconductor workforce training systems, evaluating science park feasibility in Idaho, and identifying pathways for Taiwanese entrepreneurs to establish a U.S. business presence.
What emerged was more than a trade visit. It became the foundation for Idaho MERITS — a structured, multi-institutional alliance built to close Idaho's 6.3:1 technology job-to-graduate gap and position the state as a premier global partner for semiconductor talent development.
